Caleb suddenly went very still. Sarah watched as he slowly lifted his head and looked at her. Her heart beat furiously, not only from his touch, but from the fear of his response to her declaration. She saw the passion in his eyes, marveled that she was actually responsible for it, but the control in him she’d felt slip only moments ago was back again.

He drew in a long breath and rose on one elbow to gaze down at her. “Sarah,” he said carefully, “you’re twenty-six years old.”

She nodded.

“And the man who was killed, Robert, you said he was your boyfriend.”

“I said he was my friend. Agent Howard thought he was my boyfriend, but Robert didn’t—” she felt her cheeks burn “—well…we were just friends.”

He continued to stare at her, a mixture of amazement and desire and uncertainty on his face. “You mean to tell me you never, that you haven’t—”

She shook her head. “I dated a little, but I just never met the right man. And the few dates I did go on turned into wrestling matches, so I wasn’t exactly enthusiastic to go out much. I liked dating Robert, he never put those pressures on me. I felt safe.” She looked away. “I’d always planned to, but I was so busy with work and Granny and it just never happened.”

Caleb rolled his eyes. “Dammit, Sarah. It’s not like taking a trip or enrolling in a class.”

“For me it was,” she said with a sigh. “Of course, I dreamed about it, like every other woman, that I’d be swept off my feet and carried away to a castle where we’d live happily ever after and make lots of babies, but I knew that would never happen to me.”

Caleb’s mouth thinned. “It can still happen. Twenty-six is not exactly doddering, for God’s sake.”

She should have felt humiliated, talking about herself like this with a man. And yet she didn’t. She looked at him, then reached up and slid her fingers through his thick hair. His jaw clenched at her gentle touch.

“Caleb, I’ve gone through too much with you to be embarrassed about who I am. There’s no undoing the past—nor do I want to—but this is the present. Right now. And whatever future I may have, I want to remember this night and being with you.”

His fingers circled her wrist and tightened. He did not move her hand away, nor did he pull her closer. He stared at her for what seemed like an eternity, his look that of a man standing on a train trestle facing an oncoming train. Did he jump a hundred feet down, or did he face the train?

Lightning flashed, and the room burst alive with silvery light. Thunder growled. Overhead the rain beat a steady rhythm. She watched his face, the play of the fire and the lightning over the rugged angles of his square jaw and dark eyes. His black gaze burned her.

“There are no castles. No ‘happily ever after,’ and no babies. Not here, not with me.
